Recently, GMLC president Kristie Stern had the opportunity to participate in a Girl Scout career event with the Green and White Mountain Troop from Georgia, Vermont. Kristie found the event inspiring, as it allowed her to introduce young girls to an industry they rarely consider—heavy machinery and equipment. The event followed a “career speed dating” format, where 30-35 girls, ranging from kindergarten to 9th grade, rotated every five minutes between 18 women professionals. The girls were eager to ask questions about career paths, day-to-day responsibilities, education, and even if Kristie had always aspired to lead a recruiting firm.
Kristie shared her career journey and education, asking the girls about their school interests and helping them see how these could translate into future opportunities in industries like ours. It was an exciting, interactive experience, with the girls hearing from women across various fields, including executives, scientists, authors, members of the military, and healthcare professionals. This was GMLC’s second time attending the event; last year, Amanda Thibault spoke to the troop about STEM careers.
For our friends in the Northeast, the troop will be hosting a “Touch a Truck” event in June 2025. If you’re interested in participating, let us know, and we’ll get you connected!
